Molly Dunkle founded dunkle in 2013 to celebrate simplicity, diversity, & connection through daily beauty rituals. Each product in her collection is handmade and batch signed by Molly in the Brisbane dunkle studio.

Molly’s business enjoyed steady growth until COVID-19 threatened to disrupt her supply chain and interfere with her personalised service model. Fortunately, with support from Female Founders mentor Kellie Dyer, Molly was able to successfully adapt and evolve, partnering with more local suppliers and establishing solid, sustainable business systems.

What does your business do?
dunkle is a makeup and skincare brand. I hand make the products here in Brisbane, featuring locally sourced, farm-fresh ingredients. The product line is simple and sustainably made, with a focus on quality raw materials that are great for the skin.

Why did you start your business?
As a curious 12-year-old, I started making lip balms with my environmental chemist father. Those early years of play drove my passion for using natural ingredients which I later combined with my passion for sustainable business management when I started dunkle in 2013.

Where in Queensland are you located?
I live and work in New Farm, Brisbane. The dunkle studio is within walking distance from home, I absolutely love walking along the Riverwalk and through the New Farm Park rose gardens. Conveniently, the studio is also just off James St which is perfect for strolling down when I need a coffee break.

Tell us about a recent business challenge.
Recently I was actually able to step back from my business while I took maternity leave, which I am very proud of. Being a sole trader, it was a challenge to plan how to remove myself from the business while it continued to run. After lots of brainstorming sessions, I was able to focus and schedule all of my stock management, social media posts, and newsletters in advance, and set up clear procedures for others to fulfill my online orders. The lessons in efficiency were incredible and a real growth opportunity for my business. It has given me a fresh perspective that I will carry through now that I am back to working.

What are you most excited about in the next 12 months?
With my fresh perspective after taking leave, I am really excited to grow the business over the next 12 months. I am working on a new product line to launch in early 2022, it’s furthering the multi-use concept with the brand and features more sustainable packaging. I am also eager to start my internship program in the new year too.

How has the Advance Queensland Female Founders Impact Program helped you?

In 2020 I was lucky enough to join the Female Founders Mentoring Program with Kellie Dyer as my mentor. It was exactly what I needed during such a wild year. I worked with Kellie to pivot my business and adapt to the changes bought on by COVID-19, including partnering with more local suppliers. It was great to have that feeling of consistency and accountability during our sessions.

Aside from the mentoring program, I have really enjoyed all of the Female Founders webinar programs and events. The Female Founders program has been wonderful for building business connections and community with other female founders. I especially loved the recent workshop with Donna Hann on creating a healthy business and family balance (particularly relevant to me right now!).
