Impactful Results
Cooperative Research Australia’s Collaborate Innovate 2024 Conference was the perfect place to talk research impact with Australia’s research community.
Over three days, Impact Innovation asked researchers, industry and CRC management which three R&D Impact Principles they would focus on to generate more impact for CRCs. We gave them three pebbles to cast their votes. The results are in and here are the top three responses:
1st Place: Impact R&D (26% of votes)
Next investors need more than just technical research outcomes to be the basis of an investment decision. They also require market, supply chain and financial information that is relevant to them, and that aligns with their risk profile.
A key discussion point that the Impact Innovation team heard was the need for specialist project design expertise to identify the Impact R&D elements. It was also recognised that the use of tools such as Impact and Commercial Readiness (IC Readiness®) help to identify which Impact R&D elements to focus on.
2nd Place: Collaboration Timing (19% of votes)
Collaborative R&D needs team members with different skills that work together to design better experiments and solve experimental problems. If the collaboration does not happen at the experimental design and implementation stages, then it is just contract research
Many conference participants expressed challenges with building truly collaborative teams. The Impact Innovation team discussed a number of collaboration approaches that solve these problems.
3rd Place: R&D Management Systems (18% of votes)
To maximise outcomes, R&D investors should have well-designed and managed R&D or innovation systems that align with their organisational strategy. These systems should also establish a clear definition of “value” and activate stage gates that can stop projects unlikely to generate that value.
The Impact Innovation team had many discussions around the importance of both the CRC having an effective R&D Management System as well as Tier 1 and Tier 2 partners.
Coming it at 4th place was Transformative Operations (16% of votes), followed by Next Investor (11% votes) and Refresh & Redesign (10% votes). The last one was a high priority for CRC managers and industry (R&D investors) but a low priority for researchers.
We asked Collaborate Innovate 2024 what they would do to generate more impact from their research by voting with three pebbles.
